Inspiring ethical jewellery
Audrey Migot-Adholla’s dream turned into reality when she founded Yala. A dream to celebrate and recognise the creative, design and entrepreneurial talent of Kenyan artisans. Taking inspiration from traditional crafts, Yala transforms reclaimed materials, like brass, into modern and beautiful jewellery that is made to last.
As the first jewellery brand in the UK to become a certified B Corp, Yala has always set out with the intention to use their business as a force for good. You can read more about Yala’s B Corp assessment and rating here.
Having direct relationships with over 150 Kenyan artisans means that Yala can ensure transparency across the production process – providing fair wages and safe working environments. Yala roots much of their work in Kenya, employing Kenyan makers, models, photographers and stylists.
Empowering women is a key objective for Yala. Their partnership with the BMB Workshop in Kenya sees 158 local Maasai women employed, while preserving the traditional Maasai beading practice. Providing three times the average daily wage in Kenya, the workshop enables its artisans to look after themselves and their families, as well as the wider community. In total, their work has a positive impact on over 300 households in the area.
Another group financially empowered through Yala’s operation in Kenya are the brass workshops located in and around Nairobi. Through their low tech processes, each recycled brass piece of jewellery is purified, moulded, hammered and polished by hand.
